Last Blog Post Of 2007

Such an action packed last day in Room 18!
But now the kids have taken all their belongings home and Room 18 sits empty for the holidays....or is there a bear on guard duty? (-;

A big thank-you to all the parents who have helped out over the term and also to those parents who came to see me over the course of the week to say lots of lovely things to me. (-:

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday,

Christmas Baking

So today, thanks to the help from a team of very awesome parents, Room 18 did some last minute baking in the Food Tech room. We made shortbread cookies!

The Room 18 Christmas Tree

I've heard from many people that Room 18's Christmas Tree was the BEST one at the annual Hobsonville Christmas Tree Festival (also known by other names...). I completely agree. I think our PVA glitter snowmen and our sparkly felt spiral trees decorated with pom poms and reindeer are INCREDIBLE. Here is a picture of our tree in the auditorium on the night of the carols.

Ho Ho Ho...To The North Pole It Will Go!

In Term 3 and 4, Room 18 students have been working on persuasive writing and recounts. In a Room 18 'first', the students wrote letters to Santa explaining all the ways they've been good this year and just exactly why Santa should be bringing them their top 3 presents.

We've done those disgusting, dirty, slimy dishes all year...we've taken out the rubbish to the bin on the street...we've even put out those incredibly heavy placemats onto the table NIGHT after NIGHT after NIGHT. And now it's our turn to remind Santa of all that hard work.

So Santa, if you're reading this, our letters are in the mail. You'll receive them soon. We are hoping for a reply within a week. But what we're really looking forward to is that Barbie Island Princess, the Australian jet fighter, the Ben 10 watch, or the Polly Pocket Polly-Tastic Triple Decker Party Bus under our tree on Christmas morning. And while trying to SAY 'Polly Pocket Polly-Tastic Triple Decker Party Bus' is quite a difficult thing to do (let alone WRITE it correctly!), we're sure your elves will know EXACTLY how to make it!

Thanks Santa. We look forward to hearing from you soon. Above is a photo of our envelope. This should help you find our writing easily amongst all those other letters that you receive around this time of year. (-;

Ginger With Jalen

Jalen came back to school with Ginger recently and had written out a wonderful story complete with pictures! Below is Jalen's story.

Ginger At Jalen's Home
On Saturday morning, we went to t-ball. Ginger shouted "Go Roosters!"
He had fun meeting the team after the game and Ginger was part of the team. On Saturday afternoon Ginger watched The Breakers on TV with me. We liked the really humongous 3 pointer. On Sunday morning we played basketball. Ginger is really good at slam dunks. It was fun having Ginger at my home.

It's A Busy News Day.

WHOAH! I almost forgot to share the big news! It is with great happiness that I announce Ginger (the class bear) is now OFFICIALLY married to 'Sally'. The ceremony was only just yesterday and appears on this blog courtesy of our attending journalist, Nicole. It appears that Nicole has been reading up on her Woman's Day Magazine because as far as celebrity weddings go, Ginger's has been reported with much fanfare! THANKS, NICOLE!

Parent Help...Again!

Thanks again to the parents who have come in to help out with our Christmas crafts! If there are any other Room 18 parents out there who could spare some time to come into the classroom as well over the next week, it would be appreciated as always. We have about 1 week left to make sure our Christmas crafts are ready to go up on the tree. Yikes!

Cheers,

Science Friday!

Another Science Friday has come and gone. Today we looked at floating and sinking.
The kids should now be able to explain why peanuts sink in water, but float in fizzy drink! Another one of life's little mysteries explained right here in Room 18...

Ho Ho Ho!

Getting excited about Christmas already? Mr. Nash certainly has been...and a lot of that is due to the kids coming back from music class with Mrs. Felix every Wednesday singing Christmas carols. Feeling the need to spread the festive cheer, Mr. Nash snuck into the music room today and managed to record Room 18 + Room 19 practicing up for the big caroling/tree/picnic evening in December. Put on your santa hats, cause this singing will put you in the festive mood for sure! You can listen to them by clicking HERE.

Friday's Featured Writer

I felt terrified at the bone chuckling spider and a roach creeping in the haunted house that made me want to heave and pull my teeth out.
We went into an old old lounge. It felt like there was a trap door just waiting for someone to fall into it with a three headed dog directly below it, having the same attacks as the one in my playstation but you can imagine that game yourself aaaaaaah!.
We went into a kitchen that had old icky sticky cobwebs hanging everywhere and as dark as a cosmic storm from the inside which I imagine is very dark.
We slipped into a bedroom. It felt like a lion was sneaking up on us and would have gobbled us up and chewed us like a chew toy. Yikes.
So that was how I imagined the haunted house.

The dark scary haunted house.
We walked in the dark spooky doorway. People were screaming like dinosaurs. It looked as dark as bears fur. There were creepy spiders all over the place. I thought I was going to die.
Then we went to the kitchen. Ethan was saying “Mum! Mum! Mum!”. The bench was as blue as the sky.
Then we went to the bedroom. We heard someone say “wait up”, but it was only Ginger. The bed was as soft as cat’s fur.

The haunted house is as scary as bats and watch out for the tooth crackling ferocious huge monster!
In the dark and spooky haunted house we went in the lounge. It was so old that when you stepped on the floor it went crack. Then we went in the kitchen, the cobwebs were as sticky as gum and as big as trees. Then we went in the bedroom. Just then we saw a monster looking at us, then Min said “Is that the tooth crackling ferocious huge monster?” “Yes it is, run!” said Aaron. "Aaaaaaaaaah!"
Then we ran all the way home.

One very scary spooky night Room 18 visited a haunted scary house.
We crept into the long long lounge with creepy spiders. We shut the door.
Then we went into the kitchen with heaps of cobwebs and I thought that I saw a 9 foot monster but it was just Ginger. Spiders were just spinning their webs.
Then we went into the bedroom it was really a 100 foot monster. We looked and there was a very very spooky skeleton. What a scary skeleton! We ran out of the bedroom and ran out of the kitchen and ran out of the long long lounge and out of the house to the class and we hugged each other. We looked at each other, we were wondering if the skeleton had come back. We had just seen Ginger outside we were going to see Ginger.

Monday's Feature Writer- Our Trip To The Haunted House -Recount Writing

Thump, thump I can hear my heart beating like a drum.
We walked into the evil spooky haunted house. When we got in we heard a really scary noise and I said “It was just Mr Nash” and then we got in the lounge and we saw a spider web and it was stuck in our hair.
Then we went in the kitchen and the kitchen had dishes on the floor and one of us stepped on a glass plate and it had cobwebs on it. Then we went into the bedroom and there was a big hairy beast standing in front of us and Madeline said “It’s only Ginger”.

Parent Help

Hello all,

As we move into the last weeks of the school year, we will be shifting focus more towards the arts...there are several christmas crafts scheduled in already!
Throughout last term, many parents came to me and kindly offered their assistance with class projects. I am hoping to interest those parents in making an appearance once again in Room 18. Starting tomorrow, and likely every Friday, there will be arts projects that I could really use some help with. Tomorrow is black PVA flowers. If you have time to spare for the sake of some great arts projects, your help would be very much appreciated! If you are available on other days of the week, please let me know as well.

Thanks,
Mr. Nash

Transport Posters

During Term 3, the students were immersed in the world of transport. They carefully chose questions they wanted to know the answers to within the parameters of our 'Rich Question', "How have the changes in transport affected us- people and environment".
With the help of Mr. Nash, the students designed a poster using Microsoft Word to display the information they found. You will need Adobe Acrobat to view the posters. The good news is that your computer will likely already have it installed.
To view each group's posters, please click on the names of the students below.

If you wait patiently, the transport posters should appear on your screen. If they do not appear, you can download Adobe Acrobat HERE for free. Alternatively, parents can drop by the classroom and check them out on the wall. (-:

Ginger on Holiday

So as the kids are all aware, Ginger the class bear was meant to spend the school holidays with Mr. Nash...AND WOW...what a holiday they had! They returned to Auckland feeling very sunny and much more rested. This is mostly due to the trip to Tonga and then onwards to Christchurch before returning home to Auckland. While Tonga provided Ginger with a great chance to lay back on the beach and eat tasty treat foods, Mr. Nash was off climbing trees in search of ripe coconuts.
When Ginger arrived in Christchurch, Mr. Nash suggested Ginger come to the gym with him to burn off some of that fat. The results speak for themselves...you'll notice Ginger looking MUCH more trim in front of the fountain at the Christchurch Botanical Gardens. Unfortunately, Ginger has regained most of his bear-weight. That's alright, I think everybody agrees we love Ginger all the same! (-: Ginger did happen to mention that he was on the lookout for Callum (who was also in Christchurch during the holidays). No Callum-sightings this holiday though!
Above are the pictures taken throughout the holidays. Apologies for the random way in which the pictures have been posted. You can enlarge the pictures, especially for the one where Ginger is hidden somewhere on the Bridge of Remembrance, by clicking just once on the photo.

Magic Mud

Hello all,

Today Room 18 and Room 19 made magic mud and experimented with liquids, solids, and SUSPENSIONS to help us learn about our theme this year of 'change'. But really, it was just an excuse for Mr. Nash and Mrs. Beeton to take the kids outside on another beautiful day to get mucky. For those parents who have kids returning home today covered in magic mud, not to worry...it's completely washable! And if there are any requests for HOW TO MAKE magic mud at home, here is the 'recipe'.

1) Add a little bit of water to a little bit of cornstarch.
2) If you're feeling particularly adventurous during these holidays, you can also add some food colouring! (-;

Our Response

Mrs. Doherty, we have come up with some very persuasive letters to convince you that we need to keep colours at Hobsonville School. We really hope that you will change your mind and allow us to keep our school colourful! We would be very interested to hear your response before we leave for the holidays, please!

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I strongly believe that we should definitely not have to change the colours at Hobsonville School.
Firstly, I will feel sad if all the lovely and happy colours have gone.
Secondly, if we paint the grass, it might kill the grass.
Thirdly, we might fall from the playground.

Lastly, we might not find our classroom.
You should definitely not take our rainbow colours away.
Isabella

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I think that we should definitely not have our colours taken away from Room 18 students.
Firstly, I definitely do not agree with you Mrs. Doherty because all the colours are so beautiful.
Secondly, I do not want the school all black because we like all the amazing colours in the whole entire world.
Thirdly, I think that we must not have all our bags, our books, and our uniforms turned black.
Lastly, all the colours are so exciting to us.
I don't agree with you, Mrs. Doherty. We must not have our school all black.

Armani

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
You should not ban colours because how will we see all the stuff on the wall?
Firstly, we might lose our jumpers if we take them off.
Secondly, if we paint the grass black, it will kill it.
Thirdly, when everyone gets to school, the teacher's crossing vest will be lost in all the other black stuff.
Lastly, if someone is just new to this school, they might not know where to go because of the numbers on the doorway.

Karea

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I think the school should be colourful because then people will come to this school.
Firstly, when people are playing soccer they won't be able to to find the black ball in the black grass.
Secondly, we won't know what teacher is on duty.
Thirdly, we won't like out uniform.
I definitely think the school should be colourful.

Ethan

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I definitely think we should not have the colours taken away from the school.
Firstly, if the jackets that the teachers wear are black, we will not know if they are on duty.
Secondly, we will not go to school because it is all black.
Thirdly, all the bags will be black and we will not know who's is who's.

Grace

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I definitely think we should have colours at school.
Firstly, we wouldn't be able to to see the duty teachers without their colourful vests.
Secondly, we would lose our uniform in the black grass.
Thirdly, it would be difficult to know which is the which and which bookbag is which and which tote tray is mine.
Lastly, if the grass was painted black it would kill the grass and that would not be good at all!
So I think that we should keep the colours this way.

Georgia

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I think we should have colours at school.
Firstly, we won't know which bookbags are ours because our name is black and our book bags would be black. So we can't see out bookbags. It will be all black!
Secondly, if you paint the grass black, it will kill the grass.
Thirdly, it will look yucky and it will be boring and the kids will moan to their mother that they don't want to go to school.
I definitely do not want to have the school black.

Chanice

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I strongly believe that Hobsonville School should not ban colours.
Firstly, we wouldn't be able to see the duty teacher's vests.
Secondly, if we paint the grass black, we might kill it.
Thirdly, we might fall off the playground.
Lastly, our food is colourful, so what will we eat?
Room 18 does not want colours banned.

Jalen

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I don't think colours should be taken away from Hobsonville School!
Firstly, we couldn't see the things around us.
Secondly, we won't see the playground!
Thirdly, we woldn't see the classroom!
Lastly, we wouldn't see the whiteboard.
I definitely think colours shouldn't be taken away.

Isaak

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I think that colours should not be banned.
Firstly, if we paint the grass black, it might die.
Secondly, our food is colourful, so what would we have to eat?
Thirdly, it would be hard.
Lastly, the trees might die.

Min

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I didn't know you like black.
I definitely think the whole school should be colourful.
Firstly, I want the whole playground to be colourful because it make me happy and it makes me feel so beautiful.

James

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I think that colours should not be banned.
Firstly, we might not be able to read books with coloured writing.
Secondly, if you paint the grass, it will die.
Thirdly, we won't see anything.
Lastly, we'll get sick of it.
I think that colours should not be banned.

Marica

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I strongly think that we should definitely not make the school black.
Firstly, we won't know which schoolbag is ours.

Ruhi

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I strongly believe that Hobsonville School should not ban colours.
Firstly, we might not be able to read books with coloured writing.
Secondly, if we paint the grass black it might kill it.
Thirdly, we don't want to change the colour of our hair and our eyes.
Lastly, school wold be dull and boring without colours. Children wouldn't want to come to school anymore.
I strongly believe that Hobsonville School should not ban colours.

Nicole

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
It is felt be all the children in Room 18, Hobby MUST not ban colours.
Firstly, we would have to have burnt food like burnt strawberries and burnt grapes. YUCK!
Secondly, if we paint the grass black it might kill it and that wouldn't be good at all!
Thirdly, it would be way harder to find out who's bag was who's!
Lastly, it would be really difficult to find out which teachers were on duty without their colourful vests on. So what would we do if someone was hurt? And we could fall off the playground if it was all black!
So Mrs. Doherty, that's why Room 18 thinks that Hobby must not be all black.

Callum

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
We must have colours at Hobsonville School.
Firstly, classroom displays wouldn't be very interesting for people to look at.
Secondly, people might hate the colour black and they might not come to school. The school might turn into a big yucky school because no one will be able to pick up rubbish.
Thirdly, people might be sad when the colours go.
Lastly, if you paint the grass black, it might kill it.
We must not paint the school black.

Ryan

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
We must not have colours banned at Hobsonville School.
Firstly, if you paint the grass black it will kill it.
Secondly, we wouldn't be able to see the bright coloured vests that the duty teachers wear.
Thirdly, we might fall off the playground.
Lastly, we might not be able to find our school bags.
We must not have colours banned at Hobsonville School.

Aaron

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I strongly believe that Hobsonville School colours should not be taken.
Firstly, we might not be able to read books with coloured writing.
Secondly, we all have coloured food, so what will we eat?
Thirdly, I want the whole playground to be colourful because it makes me feel happy.
Lastly, we will not be able to do publishing because the whole paper will be black.
So we all want the school to be colourful. Do you agree or disagree?

Nicholas

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I strongly believe that Hobsonville School should not ban colours.
Firstly, we definitely don't want black and white all over the school.
Secondly, we will feel sad if all the lovely happy bright colours are taken away from the school.
Thirdly, classroom displays wouldn't be very interesting for people.
Lastly, we might not be able to read books with coloured writing.
That's why I think that Mrs. Doherty shouldn't paint the school black and white.

Piper

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I definitely think that Hobsonville School should have colours.
Firstly, it is be fun and exciting.
Secondly, we would not know where to put our stuff.
Thirdly, if we paint the grass black, it might kill it.
Lastly, people wouldn't come to school.
I definitely think that Hobsonville School should have colours.

Madeline

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I think that colours should not change to black.
Firstly, if we paint the grass black, it might kill it.
Secondly, I will feel sad if all the lovely happy bright colours are taken away from the school. Bright colours cheer you up and make you happy.
Thirdly, our food is colourful so what would we have to eat?
Lastly, we might not be able to read books with coloured writing.
I think that colours should not change to black.

Joshua H

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
We think that colours should not be banned.
Firstly, if your shoes come off, you wouldn't be able to find them in all the black.
Secondly, you wouldn't be able to read books.
Thirdly, if you want to play Buzz, you can't because you can't see the numbers in the black.
Lastly, you can't see anything.

Flynn

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I strongly believe that Hobsonville School should not ban colours.
Firstly, we will miss the lovely colours.
Secondly, if we paint the grass black, it might kill it.
Thirdly, we couldn't do our publishing because it'd be all black.
Lastly, black wouldn't be exciting.
Black would not be interesting.

Joshua V

And Mrs. Doherty, you do have one supporter. The rest of us hope he doesn't convince you to keep your decision as-is!

Dear Mrs. Doherty,
I definitely think that black should be at school.
Firstly, we will look like an All Black.
Secondly, if we play armies, we will be camouflage.
Thirdly, you might be a fan of the All Blacks.
Lastly, we can dye our hair black.

SHOCKING NEWS FOR HOBSONVILLE PRIMARY (Podcast Episode #11)

Wow. The bomb was dropped in Room 18 today when we were interviewing the principal, Mrs. Doherty. She showed up for the interview all dressed in black. She politely answered all our questions but Room 18 was left in complete shock by the end of the interview (which later turned into 'riled up' by the end of the day!). Just what was this crazy information that Mrs. Doherty passed on to us during the interview? Tune in and find out by clicking HERE!
Ryan was quick to suggest that we needed to convince Mrs. Doherty of her hasty decision making. Ryan thought the best thing we could do was to each write her a letter using all those persuasive writing skills we've learned this term. With a class vote, it was unanimously decided that it would be well worth the effort! Stay tuned...we're hoping to turn Mrs. Doherty's decision around in these last few days of the term. The pressure is on.

ANOTHER new blog feature!

Our newest feature involves a bit of extension writing for some students.
Our featured writer for today is Callum.

Dear Mum and Dad

I must be allowed to have more time on the playstation.

Firstly, I hate having to wait till the weekend and sometimes I don’t even play it.

Secondly, the two parts we are doing are really really hard, so we need more time to play it!

Thirdly, I try really really hard to do the right things so I can play it!

Lastly, it’s really really fun.

So there you have it, why I must be allowed to have more time on the playstation.

Joke of the Day

One of our new features this week is a (near) daily joke typed in by the students themselves.
I must admit that some of the jokes fly way over my head, but the kids seem to get a really good laugh out of them. Hopefully you do too! The students are typing in the jokes in order to improve their typing skills as well as to work on their writing of common sight words. These are words that they need to know 'just like that!' rather than trying to sound them out.
The jokes are collected by the students themselves from books or from family/friends. Enjoy!

Podcast Episode #4

You can listen to it HERE.

INCOMING EMAIL FROM DUBAI!

Well hello there Room 18!

Finally I have found a moment to write to you all and let you know how
things are going over in dubai! I actually write you a very long email last
night and just as i was about to send it the server went down and i lost it
- i was even in the process of attaching some photos for you!! Very
upsetting i can assure you! But anyway here I am and trying again.

Well so far Dubai has been a very interesting experience with poor Miss John
being very sick after only 2 days of being in the country. So unfortunately
i have managed to spend almost 3 days bed ridden with a nasty bug and that
was really not much fun at all! But i am up and about now and actually as i
write to you i am sitting in my classroom. You would be amazed at the size
of this wee room - just tiny! I really can't imagine 23 little bodies all
running around in here as it is nothing like our lovely big room 18. You
must never complain about lack of space that is for sure as Room 18 would be
at least 2 and half times the size of my room! Yes it is very cozy in here!
I thought of you all as I was unpacking my Dr Suss books and felt really
awful that i had taken them away from you as i know how much you loved them!
But I can assure you that the children here will love them and look after
them just as much as you did.

As for the heat well that is quite something else! It is so unbelievably
hot here that you just can't go outside in the heat of the day. Well
actually some crazy people do but as for me, well I am confined to my
air-conditioned apartment and in fact any where that has air con is my best
friend right now! It is a lot like stepping out into a sauna and you feel
like you might choke on the air it is so thick! Certainly not like our
lovely cool air we have in NZ. I do miss the cool temperatures and can
hardly believe that i ever complained about being cold! So next time you
are hugging the heater think of me and step back out into the cool air -
just for me!

It is also very different with regards to the scenery I have from my
apartment. I am used to staring out into lovely green pastures and home and
even seeing a sheep or two! But here in Dubai (you boys will just love
this!) my window looks about upon almighty cranes and construction work! Oh
and plenty of dust and desert to be seen as well! It is very different that
is for sure!

I was very brave and i managed to venture out to the Mall of the Emirates
the other day which is a MASSIVE mall just down the road from my apartment.
Well words can not describe just how big this place is...it took me about 4
hours of wandering around lost in circles before i managed to find an exit
and high tail it home! It didn't help of course that i was only going on 3
hours sleep after my long flight! Anyway they have this unbelievable ski
place right in the mall and you can shop and at the same time watch people
skiing down the mountain! Very cool I thought and i saw plenty children
having a ball with the toboggans too so i can only imagine that you would
all just love it!

So I still have another week before i am introduced to my new class but I
have been told that i have 23 children and they will be from all different
nationalities so it will be lovely to finally meet them all. The school
here is very big and has about 6 levels so very different to Hobsonville
school which is much more spread out. It is too hot for the children to
play on the field like you do, they are instead restricted to a tiny play
area (looks a lot like the play ground that you see on the indoor playing
areas of McDonalds) outside and can you believe they are only aloud 20
minutes for playing time! And also not to mention that their day starts at
10 minutes to 8! And you thought your day was long! They work right up
until 3 o'clock as well so I ca imagine that i will be one tired teacher by
the end of my first week!

Well I just wanted you all to know that i think of you often and of course
miss you all a lot. I hope that you are working hard for Mr Nash (as i am
sure you will be) and I would love to hear back from you when you are not
too busy of course.

Take care Room 18 and know that I think of you lots. I will write again
soon i promise.

love from
Miss John
xx
